Are you like many women who have heavy, oversized breasts that cause daily pain and discomfort? You may be considering breast reduction already but do not know if you can qualify for breast reduction. So, how do you if you are a candidate for breast reduction?
How Does Breast Reduction Work?
Also known as a reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction is an outpatient surgery that takes around 2-3 hours. Glandular tissue, skin, and fat will be removed during the procedure. The surgery reduces the weight of the breasts, making them appear firmer and smaller. They also will feel lighter.
Breast reduction surgery primarily reduces breast size and can also reduce the areolas’ size, which is the skin surrounding the nipples.

Am I a Candidate for a Breast Reduction?
If you have large breasts that are affecting daily aspects of your life, such as:
- Limiting physical activity because of breast heaviness
- Experiencing constant neck, shoulder, and back pain
- Having skin irritation or rash under the breast crease
- Feeling self-conscious about your breast size
You may be a candidate for breast reduction. An ideal candidate is in good physical health, does not fluctuate in weight, does not smoke, and has realistic expectations about breast reduction results.
Dr. Holley does not recommend breast reduction for women who are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed in the future.

Breast reduction has not only physical benefits but also emotional benefits as well. Reducing breast weight can relieve women of a physical burden that has been causing chronic pain and discomfort. Additionally, having a breast reduction can improve overall mobility.
Self-esteem and confidence may increase significantly with breast reduction because of the ability to choose how your proportions appear. A breast reduction can help women feel less self-conscious because there are fewer instances of unwanted attention towards their breasts.
