Microneedling is a decades-old skin rejuvenation practice that has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. At West Michigan Plastic Surgery, Kalamazoo we use the state-of-the-art SkinPen® to perform microneedling. SkinPen® is the first microneedling tool approved by the FDA. It is an automated, medical-grade product that delivers measurable results on a consistent basis.
SkinPen® has sterile, disposable needle cartridges and is designed with proprietary technology to prevent cross-contamination. It is approved for use in adults 22 years and older.
Microneedling or collagen induction therapy (CIT) is a skin rejuvenation treatment that improves skin tone and texture using a special device with short, tiny needles at the end.
During treatment, the microneedling tool is gently moved across the skin and the needles create micro-channels in the upper layer. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural wound repair process and stimulate the production of collagen. The growth in collagen takes place over the course of several months. Collagen makes the skin firmer and fills in fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars, creating an overall younger look.
The tiny needles in the microneedling devices can be set to lengths of .25mm to 2.5mm. The longer needles are effective for reducing the appearance of scars because they break up scar tissue and encourage collagen remodeling.

Microneedling takes about 45 minutes to perform.
Most patients need 2-5 microneedling treatments for optimal skin rejuvenation. You will see some improvement in the appearance of your skin after the first and second treatments, but peak results will occur after the final treatment. Due to its non-invasive nature, microneedling does not usually require any downtime. The skin may look slightly sunburned after treatment, but this should clear within a few days.
