Loose, sagging skin on the thighs is a problem for many people, but it often takes more than exercise to tone and reshape them. Sudden or significant weight fluctuations, hereditary traits, and aging are some of the factors that can produce sagging skin and excess fat on the thighs, but a thigh lift is an effective solution.
Dr. Scott Holley is a board-certified plastic surgeon who utilizes some of the most advanced cosmetic surgical techniques available today. He is dedicated to helping patients in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids achieve sculpted, more attractive thighs with thigh lift surgery.

A thigh lift (thighplasty) is a surgical procedure that tones and reshapes the thighs by removing loose skin and excess fat. The goal of thigh lift surgery is to give the thighs a slimmer, firmer look and improve lower body contours. A thigh lift is routinely performed on people that have lost a great deal of weight, so it’s often combined with other contouring procedures such as an extended tummy tuck or circumferential lower body lift surgery.
Good candidates for a thigh lift are those with loose, sagging skin on the thighs. Individuals planning to undergo thigh lift should live a healthy lifestyle, be non-smokers, and have maintained a stable weight for 6 months or more.
Sagging skin on the thighs can be caused by a variety of factors, so Dr. Holley conducts an individual assessment for each patient and then recommends an appropriate surgical plan. Thigh lift surgery is therefore designed for your unique needs. During your consultation, Dr. Holley will discuss your aesthetic goals, examine your thighs, and get details on your medical history.
A thigh lift is performed under general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours. A thigh lift may be done with a standard or short-scar technique, so the incision patterns vary depending on the amount of skin being addressed.
A full inner thigh lift incision will start in the groin area, extend downward, and wrap around the back of the thigh. Liposuction may be incorporated with a thigh lift to remove stubborn fat of the outer thigh, hip or calf area. After the fat is removed the excess skin is trimmed, and the thighs recontoured to give them a firmer, more youthful appearance.
Thigh lift surgery is done as an outpatient procedure so you can return home after the operation.
The thighs will look leaner and more contoured immediately after surgery but final results will take several weeks to become apparent. Your thigh lift results can be long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
There is typically bruising and swelling after thigh lift surgery, but this will subside as healing progresses. You will need to wear a compression garment for up to 4 weeks to help minimize swelling.
Most patients recover enough to return to work about 2 weeks after thigh surgery. Light activities can be resumed at that time, but strenuous activities should be avoided for another 3-4 weeks. Patients are advised to follow the post-surgical guidelines provided by Dr. Holley for optimal recovery.
